On 30th May 2026, the Department of Community Health Nursing, Shri Guru Ram Rai University College of Nursing, organized a World No Tobacco Day awareness program at Brahmpuri, Dehradun under the guidance of Prof  Dr. G. Ramalakshmi Dean, College of Nursing.The event was conducted with the active participation of GNM First Year students.The program aimed to spread awareness regarding the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and nicotine addiction. The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2026 was “Unmasking the Appeal - Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction.” Through various educational and awareness activities, students encouraged community members to adopt a tobacco-free lifestyle and make healthy choices.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM

  • To create awareness regarding the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine addiction.
  • To educate the community about diseases caused by tobacco use.
  • To motivate individuals to quit tobacco consumption and adopt healthy lifestyles.
  • To promote a tobacco-free environment within the community.
  • To support national and global efforts for tobacco control.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM

The awareness program was organized at Brahmpuri, Dehradun from 10:00 AM onwards. The students conducted various educational and awareness activities to educate community members about the adverse effects of tobacco use. The program focused on encouraging behavioral change and promoting healthy living through interactive and informative sessions.

ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED

a) Health Education

  • Health education sessions were conducted for community members regarding the harmful effects of smoking and smokeless tobacco products.
  • Information was provided about tobacco-related diseases such as oral cancer, lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic respiratory disorders.
  • Participants were informed about the benefits of quitting tobacco and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

b) Poster Competition

  • Students prepared and displayed educational posters based on the theme “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction.”
  • The posters highlighted the dangers of tobacco use and emphasized the importance of prevention and cessation.
  • Community members appreciated the informative and creative presentations.

c) Nukkad Natak (Street Play)

  • A Nukkad Natak was performed by the students to demonstrate the harmful consequences of tobacco addiction on individuals, families, and society.
  • The performance effectively conveyed anti-tobacco messages and encouraged community participation.
  • The street play attracted attention and created awareness among people of all age groups.

INTERACTION WITH THE COMMUNITY

The students actively interacted with community members and addressed their questions regarding:

  • Health hazards associated with tobacco consumption.
  • Effects of passive smoking on family members and children.
  • Benefits of tobacco cessation.
  • Available support systems and strategies to quit tobacco.

CONCLUSION

The World No Tobacco Day celebration organized by the Department of Community Health Nursing at Brahmpuri was highly informative and successful. Through health education, poster competition, and Nukkad Natak, the students effectively communicated the dangers of tobacco use and the importance of tobacco cessation. The program enhanced community awareness and motivated individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles. The event successfully reinforced the message:

“Say No to Tobacco, Yes to Life.”
