Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT)

Medical Laboratory Technology is an Allied Health specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases through the use of clinical laboratory tests. The student of BMLT works in central laboratory which is well-equipped with modern and automated equipments such as ELISA Reader, Biochemical, Electrolyte and Hematological Analyzers, Spectrophotometer & Digital Calorimeters, Electrophoresis unit, Binocular & Projection Microscopes, Microtome, and Automatic Tissue Processor etc.

Though the Medical Lab Technologists spend less time with patients than doctors and nurses, medical laboratory professionals play a critical role in collecting the information needed to give the best care to an ill or injured patient. The fact is that the practice of modern medicine would be impossible without the tests performed in the laboratory.

The B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology course prepares students for holding various assignments in hospitals, health care institutions, pharmaceutical industries, research laboratories and diagnostic centers. The aspiring students can further pursue education in specialized medical laboratory technology fields and progress to become scientists or teachers in academic institutions. The Medical Laboratory Technologists with an instinct also have chances of becoming industrial consultants or quality assurance officers. After attaining expertise in the field, the professionals can start their own establishment.

What is Medical Lab Technology?

The Degree in Medical Lab Technology is a three years course where professionals are taught about various aspects of health care. During the course of study, students perform various diagnostic analysis on body fluids, which include hematological, bacteriological, immunologic, chemical and microscopic. On completion of the course, a Medical Laboratory Technologist is able to provide accurate laboratory results in a timely manner as well as safeguard experimental controls, calibrate laboratory instruments, undertake delta checks (including monitoring of significant changes within a normal series of results), and ensure accuracy.

Provide the healthcare community with graduate’s expertise in the knowledge and skills to display ethical, professional conduct in education and clinical settings.
Perform analytical tests including quality control on biological specimens; including collecting and processing of biological specimens for analysis and interpret.
Demonstrate conceptual knowledge in haematology, blood chemistry, clinical Biochemistry, Immunology, immune haematology and pathogenic Microbiology.
Recognize factors that affect laboratory procedures and results and take appropriate action, within predetermined limits
Acquire basic knowledge of human Anatomy and Physiology to integrate both the functional and structural aspects of a Human body.
Acquire knowledge and application of the principle of biostatistics for the purpose of establishment and maintenance of Quality Controls (instruments and diagnostic tests).
Recognize factors that affect laboratory procedures, results and take appropriate action, within predetermined limits and safety.
Describe the principles of learning technology in application. Take interactive classroom lectures, small group discussions (debate), Seminars etc.
Apply basic scientific principles in learning new techniques and procedures of advanced Lab technology and inculcate the knowledge of handling of automatic analysers, organization and management of clinical laboratory
Provide a high quality, educational program that prepares the student to achieve competent skills essential for employment as medical laboratory technicians or researchers in diverse clinical areas.
Provide guidance to Medical Laboratory Technology program which assist them in pursuing educational and occupational opportunities that maximize their professional potential.
