Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is an important health condition affecting women, with implications extending beyond reproductive health. It is closely associated with changing lifestyles, dietary habits, obesity, hormonal imbalance, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels. To raise awareness about this important health issue, a PCOS Awareness Programme was jointly organized by Shri Guru Ram Rai University, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical & Health Sciences, and the PCOS Society. Around 500 medical and university students participated in the programme. It was highlighted that PCOS has now been renamed PMOS.
The awareness programme was held at the auditorium of Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical & Health Sciences. The event was inaugurated by Chief Guest Savita Kapoor, Hon’ble MLA, Cantt Assembly Constituency; Guest of Honour Dr. Rekha Srivastava, President, Dehradun Obstetric & Gynaecological Society; Guest of Honour Dr. Utkarsh Sharma, Principal, Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical & Health Sciences; and Programme Coordinator and Local Convener Dr. Akriti Gupta, Senior IVF Specialist, by lighting the ceremonial lamp.
Chief Guest Savita Kapoor, MLA, Cantt Assembly Constituency, said that it is essential for medical students to acquire scientific knowledge about important health issues such as PCOS. These students will guide society through healthcare services in the future. Increasing awareness about PCOS can help women receive timely advice and treatment and encourage them to make necessary lifestyle changes.
Guest of Honour Dr. Rekha Srivastava elaborated on the scientific and clinical aspects of PCOS. She stated that PCOS should not be viewed merely as a reproductive health problem affecting women. It is a complex hormonal and metabolic condition, and understanding its impact and managing it in a timely manner is essential. She briefed the students on the identification of PCOS, its causes, and modern medical approaches to its management.
Guest of Honour and Principal Dr. Utkarsh Sharma said that PCOS is a subject requiring widespread awareness in society alongside medical education. Students should understand not only the treatment of the condition but also its social, psychological, and metabolic effects. Such awareness programmes play an important role in providing medical students with a practical perspective on their academic knowledge.
Programme Coordinator and Local Convener Dr. Akriti Gupta, Senior IVF Specialist, said that it is not appropriate to consider PCOS merely a condition related to women’s ovaries. It is also associated with lifestyle, nutrition, obesity, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cardiovascular health. She stated that its effects can be controlled to a considerable extent through a healthy lifestyle, balanced nutrition, medical advice, necessary medication, regular exercise, and yoga. She emphasized the need to focus on the prevention and management of PCOS from childhood so that health risks can be identified and managed in time as girl’s transition from adolescence to adulthood.
During the panel discussion, Dr. Sahil Mahajan, Dr. Vinita Gupta, Dr. Aarti Sharma, Dr. Radhika Raturi, Dr. Archana Tandon, Dr. Kanchan Joshi, Dr. Sandipani, Dr. Neeti Kumari, Dr. Surbhi Thapliyal, Dr. Rajiv Azad, and Dr. Nihit Kharkwal shared valuable insights. Experts from various medical disciplines discussed different aspects of PCOS. Specialists in endocrinology, pulmonary medicine, radiology, dietetics, and nutrition provided students with important information on the hormonal, metabolic, nutritional, and lifestyle-related aspects of PCOS.
The programme aimed to provide medical and university students with a scientific perspective on PCOS and raise awareness about the identification, prevention, and management of this health condition. At the conclusion of the programme, Dr. Akriti Gupta delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all the guests, experts, doctors, faculty members, and participating students.
