Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology at Shri Guru Ram Rai University, Dehradun, is a vibrant centre of excellence in teaching, research, and innovation. Since its establishment in 2017, the Department has made significant progress in academic and research activities through the dedicated efforts of its faculty members, staff, and students under visionary leadership.

The Department offers a dynamic blend of traditional and emerging interdisciplinary areas of Zoology, including Ecology and Wildlife Biology, Environmental Biology, Aquatic Biodiversity, Applied Ichthyology, Applied Entomology, Economic Zoology and Parasitology, Apiculture, Pisciculture, Ornamental Fish Culture and Management, Public Health and Hygiene, Poultry Farming, Sericulture, Disaster Management, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Patenting and Bioethics, Immunology and Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Microbiology, Molecular Endocrinology, Animal Behaviour, Reproductive Biology, Cell Biology and Genetics, Molecular Biology, Evolution and Systematics, and Medical Laboratory Techniques, among others.

Over the years, the Department has developed a strong research foundation in diverse fields of Zoology, particularly in Freshwater Ecology, Biodiversity Assessment, Fish Biology, and Conservation Biology. The research activities address both fundamental and applied scientific questions of regional, national, and global significance. Faculty members, research scholars, and students of the Department have received several regional, national, and international awards and recognitions for their academic and research excellence.

Discovery of New Species of Water Mites (Acari, Hydrachnidia)

The Department has made significant contributions to taxonomic research through the discovery and description of the following six new species of water mites:

  • Neoatractides tashiwangmoi
  • Aturus uttarakhandensis
  • Sperchonopsis himalayaensis
  • Kongsbergia tuzovskiji
  • Kongsbergia uttarakhandensis
  • Sperchon dobriyalii

The Department of Zoology is equipped with well-established laboratories that support undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral teaching, training, and research activities. The laboratories provide students with hands-on experience in modern biological techniques, specimen identification, ecological assessments, and experimental research.

  • Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) introduced from the academic session 2022–23 in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
