The Department of Social Sciences, under the guidance and as a torchbearer of Professor (Dr.) Geeta Rawat, brings together Geography, Master of Social Work, Psychology and Economics under the SGRR Education Mission.
The department promotes excellence in teaching, research, training and community engagement, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.
Together, the four disciplines create a holistic academic environment—understanding the Earth, serving society, understanding human behaviour, and promoting economic development—while nurturing skilled, responsible and socially conscious professionals.

To provide high-quality interdisciplinary education, research and training in Geography, Social Work, Psychology and Economics, fostering critical thinking, professional skills, innovation and social responsibility.
Under the guidance of Professor (Dr.) Geeta Rawat, with Dr. Surendra Kaur and Dr. Shilpi Yadav, the Geography discipline focuses on quality teaching, field-based learning, analytical skills and research. Its key areas include Agricultural, Population, Environmental, Economic, Urban and Regional Geography, along with Remote Sensing and GIS. The major research thrust areas are Agricultural Geography, Population Geography and Environmental Geography. The discipline also promotes research through the Geographical Research Group and provides facilities such as Cartography, Meteorology and Survey Instruments Labs, along with free UPSC and UGC-NET coaching.
Under the guidance of Dr. Amarlatta Sharma, the Economics discipline is oriented towards teaching, research and the development of analytical skills in economic theory and applications. The discipline offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. The undergraduate programme provides foundations in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, followed by specialised areas such as labour markets, industrial organization, money and banking, economic development and finance. The postgraduate programme provides advanced knowledge along with skill-enhancement areas such as Econometrics, Environmental Economics and Agricultural Economics. The PhD programme focuses on developing research scholars equipped with statistical tools and techniques and knowledge of research and plagiarism-related issues, with the broader objective of contributing to economic growth and development.
Under the leadership of Dr. M. S. Negi, the Master of Social Work discipline focuses on preparing students to understand and respond to the changing needs of society. The two-year postgraduate programme, divided into four semesters, provides students with knowledge and practical skills in different areas of social work. Field work is an important component of the programme, enabling students to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experience and develop professional competence. The discipline also provides exposure to social-sector opportunities through NGOs and other organizations. Graduates can pursue professional opportunities in areas such as healthcare, social work, clinical social work, education, NGOs and community development.
Under the guidance of Dr. Shailja Joshi with Dr. Pratibha Singh the Psychology discipline focuses on developing an understanding of human behaviour, psychological processes and their applications in real-life and social contexts. The discipline offers programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels, with teaching-learning approaches including lectures, group discussions, experiential exercises, projects, presentations, workshops, seminars and practical experiences. Practicum forms an important component of the programme, enabling students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-life situations. Career opportunities include Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Child Psychology, Educational Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Occupational Psychology, Sports and Exercise Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy, along with interdisciplinary opportunities in areas such as human resources, market research and data-related fields.
