About the Department: The Department of Geology is an essential entity of the School of Basic and Applied Sciences, Shri Guru Ram Rai University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Since its founding in 2017, the department has advanced in every area of higher education thanks to the persistent efforts of the concerned academics and staff under capable leadership. The Department is extremely fortunate to be equally strong in the domains of soft rocks (palaeontology, stratigraphy, sedimentary, coal, and petroleum geology) and hard rocks (petrology, mineralogy, and geochemistry). Furthermore, hydrogeology, engineering geology, remote sensing, and structure and tectonics are all equally powerful. In order to protect the environment, research activities are concentrated on strengthening the framework for sustainably managing and developing natural resources (water, rocks, and minerals).
A Bachelor degree with geology is highly transferable. Graduates will be skilled in the production of geological maps and will have a thorough understanding of ancillary science. They will also be able to work independently, communicate clearly with others, and collaborate with teams. Furthermore, geology graduates will also be highly skilled in verbal and written communication, which employers like to see. A geology degree prepares you for a career in the field. Graduates can be capable to solve environmental problems, researching past climate changes, and evaluating water resources. You will learn to use scientific and technological techniques to solve real-world problems.
l Completion of B.Sc. with Geology programs unlock a wide range of career opportunities. Graduates can pursue master's degree programs or secure entry-level positions across diverse fields such as the upstream hydrocarbon exploration, mineral and groundwater exploration, environmental consultancy, IT companies specialising in geo modelling and GIS development, mining companies in roles such as geologists, GIS analyst or technician, and remote sensing image analyst.
l Post-graduation, extensive employment opportunities await in reputable organizations such as the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), and others esteemed research and industry institutions. This program equips students with the expertise and technical proficiency needed to excel in geology, geoinformatics, and allied disciplines, preparing them for dynamic career pathways in both academia and industry. The government of India's recent initiatives, including Digital India, Smart Cities, Svamitva Scheme (Drone Mapping), Clean Ganga, Swachh Bharat, Jal Shakti Abhiiyan, Nadi Utsav, and Namami Gange, have further expanded job prospects. These initiatives encourage geologists to engage in consulting, entrepreneurship, and national projects, utilizing geospatial technologies for groundwater conservation and sustainable development.
The candidates must have passed 10+2 in the relevant stream from a recognized board. The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Geology is three-year degree program (6th Semsester). M.Sc. Geology is a 2-year full-time Post Graduate program segregated into 4 semesters. The students who have graduated with science stream (B.Sc./B.Tech) with not less than 45% marks in aggregate are eligible for pursuing this program. For Ph.D. in Geology, the students who have obtain not less than 55% marks in their masters are eligible for Ph.D. However, SC/ST, OBC, and other eligible communities shall be given relaxation as per university norms.
