National Safe Motherhood Day was observed on 11th April 2026 in the OBG Ward of Shri Mahant Indresh Hospital by the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecological Nursing, SGRRIM&HS College of Nursing, Shri Guru Ram Rai University.

The programme was organized with the aim of creating awareness among antenatal and postnatal mothers regarding the importance of safe motherhood practices, maternal health, nutrition, personal hygiene, danger signs during pregnancy, newborn care, breastfeeding, family planning, and the importance of regular antenatal check-ups.

Objectives of the Programme

  • To create awareness among mothers regarding safe motherhood practices.
  • To educate antenatal and postnatal mothers about the importance of regular antenatal check-ups.
  • To provide knowledge regarding proper nutrition, personal hygiene, and rest during pregnancy.
  • To inform mothers about danger signs during pregnancy and the need for timely medical care.
  • To promote institutional delivery for the safety of mother and baby.
  • To educate mothers about breastfeeding, newborn care, and postnatal care.
  • To increase awareness regarding family planning methods, birth spacing, and immunization.
  • To encourage mothers to adopt healthy practices for better maternal and child health outcomes.

The event began with a brief introduction about National Safe Motherhood Day and its significance in reducing maternal mortality and promoting the health and well-being of mothers and newborns. The students highlighted the 2026 theme, “Holding Ground on Maternal Health,” emphasizing the need to continue supporting mothers through quality healthcare services, timely interventions, and health education.

Nursing students actively participated in the programme by conducting health education sessions for mothers admitted in the OBG Ward. Various teaching methods such as posters, charts, and interactive discussions were used to make the session more effective and understandable.

The students provided information on the following topics:

  • Importance of regular antenatal check-ups
  • Balanced diet during pregnancy and lactation
  • Personal hygiene and rest during pregnancy
  • Danger signs during pregnancy requiring immediate medical attention
  • Importance of institutional delivery
  • Breastfeeding and newborn care
  • Postnatal care of the mother
  • Family planning methods and birth spacing
  • Immunization of mother and child

Mothers participated enthusiastically in the session and clarified their doubts regarding pregnancy, delivery, breastfeeding, and newborn care. The programme helped improve their awareness and encouraged them to adopt healthy practices for safe motherhood.

The programme was successfully conducted under the leadership of Dr. Prof. G. Ramalakshmi, Dean, SGRRIM&HS College of Nursing and guidance of Dr. Dineshwori Chanu Paonam, HOD, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing, SGRRIM&HS College of Nursing. It was a meaningful and informative activity that contributed to promoting maternal health and safe motherhood among mothers.

Conclusion

National Safe Motherhood Day 2026 was observed successfully in the OBG Ward with active participation of nursing students and mothers. The programme enhanced awareness regarding maternal and child health and reinforced the importance of safe motherhood practices for ensuring healthy mothers and healthy babies.
