Celebrating Garhwali Language, Literature and Cultural Heritage at SGRRU

On the occasion of Garhwali Language Day on 2 September 2026, the Department of Humanities and Liberal Studies, under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shri Guru Ram Rai University, organised a special cultural programme dedicated to the Garhwali language, literature, and rich cultural heritage. The programme aimed to create awareness among the younger generation about the importance of preserving and promoting the Garhwali language, literature, and cultural traditions.

As part of the programme, eminent writers and contributors who have made significant contributions to the field of Garhwali language and literature were felicitated.

The personalities honoured on the occasion included Shanti Prakash ‘Jigyasu’, President of Garh Bharati Sahitya Samiti, noted writer and poetess Premlata Sajwan, poetess and theatre artist Raksha Boudai, young poetess Priya Devli and Dinesh Dabral, who has been actively working for the preservation and promotion of the Garhwali language and literature for several years.

The Chief Guest and Guest Speaker, Shanti Prakash ‘Jigyasu’, shared his views on Garhwali and Hindi literature and emphasised the need to preserve and promote the Garhwali language for future generations.

The programme outline was presented by Dr. Garima Dimri. Addressing the gathering, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. (Dr.) Preeti Tiwary, emphasised the important role of young people in preserving and promoting the language. She stated that language is an integral part of a community’s cultural identity and heritage and encouraged students to actively participate in efforts to preserve the Garhwali language, literature and traditions.

The programme featured a vibrant range of cultural performances, including group dances, Garhwali poetry recitations, and solo songs. Students and participants presented captivating performances showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Garhwal. 

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. (Dr.) Geeta Rawat. Faculty members of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, along with hundreds of students, actively participated in the programme. The event provided students with an opportunity to connect with the rich linguistic, literary and cultural traditions of Garhwal and reinforced the importance of preserving and promoting the region’s cultural heritage.
