Sterlite EdIndia Foundation conducted a workshop on “Creating a Safe Learning Classroom Environment” at Shri Guru Ram Rai University (School of Education) on 20th December 2025. The workshop aimed to develop student-teachers’ understanding of safety in classrooms beyond physical aspects, with a strong focus on the emotional and social well-being of learners.
The session began with an introduction to the teaching-learning process as a tripolar process, highlighting the role of teacher, student, and classroom environment. This was followed by a guided discussion where students shared their understanding of a safe learning environment. Their responses were categorized into:
The facilitator emphasized that safety is not limited to physical conditions but also includes emotional and social safety.
Several reflective questions and sharing activities were conducted where students discussed emotions, trust, fear of judgment, and challenges in sharing personal experiences. These activities helped students ecognize the importance of empathy, understanding others’ emotions, and creating a judgment-free environment.
A workshop activity and case-based discussions were used to help students think about how they, as future teachers, can create emotionally safe classrooms. Strategies such as building trust, active listening, regular check-ins, anonymous sharing, positive reinforcement, and acceptance of mistakes were discussed.
The workshop was highly interactive and reflective in nature. It helped student-teachers understand the deeper meaning of safety in classrooms and equipped them with practical strategies to create supportive learning environments. The session successfully encouraged participants to reflect on their role as future educators in ensuring student well-being and inclusion.
