World Cancer Day was observed on 4th February 2026 from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm at North Block, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital (SMIH), Dehradun. The programme was organized by the Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, College of Nursing, in collaboration with the Department of Oncology, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Patel Nagar, Dehradun. The programme was encouraged by Dr. Pankaj Garg, HOD in oncology department, Dr. Ruchit, Dr. Kanika, Dr. Ajeet Tiwari under surgical oncology department, Prof. Dr. G. Ramalakshmi, Principal/Dean of College of Nursing and faculty members of Medical Surgical Nursing department. The programme aimed to create awareness regarding cancer prevention, early detection, treatment modalities, and the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to reduce the burden of cancer.

The programme began at 2.00 pm with a welcome address delivered by Bsc nursing student. The speaker warmly welcomed the dignitaries, faculty members, students, healthcare professionals, and participants. The significance of World Cancer Day was highlighted, emphasizing the global effort to reduce cancer-related morbidity and mortality through awareness, education, and timely intervention.

Following the welcome address, the theme introduction was presented from 2.05 pm to 2.10 pm. The theme of World Cancer Day 2026 was explained in detail, focusing on global cancer statistics, the increasing incidence of cancer, and the shared responsibility of healthcare professionals and society in cancer prevention and control. The importance of awareness campaigns and community participation was also stressed.

From 2.10 pm to 2.15 pm, the Guest of Honor Dr. Pankaj Garg and Dr. Manoj addressed the gathering. The guest emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, regular screening, and advances in cancer treatment. The address highlighted the role of healthcare professionals, especially nurses, in patient education, emotional support, and continuity of care for cancer patients. The session was informative and inspiring for the students and participants.

A role play was conducted from 2.15 pm to 2.30 pm by the nursing students. The role play effectively portrayed common myths and misconceptions about cancer, early warning signs, risk factors, and the importance of early medical consultation. It also emphasized lifestyle modifications such as avoiding tobacco, maintaining a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and adherence to screening programs. The role play was interactive and helped reinforce key messages in an engaging manner.

This was followed by a health education session from 2.30 pm to 2.45 pm, conducted by nursing and oncology nursing students. The session covered various aspects of cancer, including causes, signs and symptoms, preventive measures, screening techniques, and available treatment options. Special emphasis was laid on common cancers, early detection methods, and the role of nurses in educating patients and the community. The session enhanced the knowledge of participants and encouraged preventive health practices.

From 2.45 pm to 3.30 pm, a poster presentation and model exhibition was organized. Nursing students actively participated by presenting posters on different types of cancers, epidemiology, risk factors, preventive strategies, diagnostic methods, and recent advancements in cancer management. The posters were informative, visually appealing, and scientifically accurate. Judges evaluated the posters based on content, clarity, creativity, and presentation skills. The exhibition provided an excellent platform for students to showcase their knowledge and raise awareness among visitors.

The prize distribution ceremony was held from 3.30 pm to 3.45 pm. Winners of the poster presentation were awarded prizes and certificates as a token of appreciation for their efforts and academic excellence. The ceremony motivated students to actively participate in academic and awareness activities.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from 3.45 pm to 4.00 pm. Gratitude was expressed to the hospital management, Department of Oncology, faculty members, judges, organizing committee, and students for their cooperation and support in the successful conduct of the programme. Special thanks were also extended to all participants for their enthusiastic involvement.

In conclusion, the observation of World Cancer Day 2026 was a great success. The programme effectively achieved its objectives by enhancing awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. It also strengthened the collaborative efforts between the Department of Medical Surgical Nursing and the Department of Oncology, contributing to the overall goal of promoting health education and community awareness.
