The School of Humanities and Social Sciences organized a one-day international conference on “Sustainable Development Goals: Challenges and Progress” on 14 February, through the Department of Geography. Academicians and researchers from India and abroad participated and deliberated on issues related to climate change, environmental conservation, socio-economic development, and policy measures.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Prathapan K. Pillai, emphasized the role of education, research, and social responsibility in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The Dean, SHSS, Prof. (Dr.) Preeti Tiwari, highlighted sustainable development as a critical concern for the future of humanity, while the Dean (Students’ Welfare), Prof. (Dr.) Malvika Kandpal, stressed its importance in creating awareness among students and researchers. The Conference Convener, Dr. Surendra Kaur Rawal, outlined the objectives and relevance of the event.

The Chief Guest, Padma Shri awardee environmentalist Prem Chand Sharma, advocated chemical-free and organic farming. The Guest of Honour, Prof. (Dr.) Mohan Singh Panwar from HNB Garhwal University, spoke on environmental challenges in the Himalayan region and the need to maintain a balance between development and conservation.

Experts from University of Kelaniya, Thammasat University, and various Indian universities shared global perspectives and research findings. The conference concluded with technical sessions, research paper presentations, and a vote of thanks, marking a successful academic exchange on sustainable development.

The program formally concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Co-Conveners, Prof. (Dr.) Geeta Rawat along with the Secretary, Dr. Sunil Kishtwal.  Dr. Pooja Jain and Dr. Shilpi Yadav played a significant role in the successful organization of the conference.
