A collaborative awareness session on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Plagiarism in Teaching and Learning was conducted at the School of Education, Shri Guru Ram Rai University (SGRRU), Dehradun in association with the Azim Premji Foundation. The objective was to enhance students’ knowledge of intellectual property, academic ethics, and the importance of protecting creative works in the educational context.

Session Details

The session began with an introduction to IPR by Dr. Diwankar Prasad Maithani. He explained the importance of IPR in education, classroom teaching, academic writing, and research. Students were guided on how intellectual creations deserve respect and legal protection.

Key domains of IPR discussed included:

  • Copyright for literary and creative works
  • Patents for inventions
  • Trademarks for brand identity
  • Design protection for product appearance
  • Geographical Indications (GI) for region-specific products

Examples related to projects, music, innovations, and traditional products were shared to demonstrate practical applications. Plagiarism in Teaching and Learning The resource persons further emphasized the concept of plagiarism as using someone else’s work without acknowledgment.

Important points discussed:

  • Direct copying, improper paraphrasing, patchwork writing, self-plagiarism. 
  • Negative impact on academic integrity and professionalism. 
  • Importance of proper citation and use of plagiarism-detection tools. 
  • Role of teachers in guiding students to maintain originality in assignments and research.

Conclusion

The program concluded with a vote of thanks. The Dean and faculty members joined students for a group photograph to mark the successful completion of the session. The session was enriching and informative, contributing significantly to the professional development of student-teachers.
