WORLD SUCIDE PREVENTION DAY AWARENESS WORKSHOP

On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, a workshop was organized for teachers and educators to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and to equip participants with effective strategies for suicide prevention. The session was conducted by Dr. Pawan Sharma, a renowned mental health expert, who emphasized the pivotal role of educators in identifying early warning signs and fostering a supportive environment for students.

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Pawan Sharma (The Psychedelic) and is aimed at:

  • Empowering teachers, educators, and students with awareness and preventive strategies
  • Participants gained practical knowledge to handle sensitive situations. 
  • Spreading awareness about suicide prevention and mental health. 
  • Helping teachers and students to identify early warning signs in peers. 
  • Providing preventive strategies and immediate steps to handle crisis situations. 
  • Encouraging an open and stigma-free discussion on mental health.
  • Empowering educators with tools to support at-risk students.
  • Provide knowledge on recognizing behavioral, emotional, and psychological indicators of distress in students.

The workshop commenced with a welcome address highlighting the significance of World Suicide Prevention Day and the urgent need to address mental health concerns in educational settings.Dr. Pawan Sharma delivered an insightful session that covered:

  • Understanding suicide – myths vs. Facts.
  • Risk factors such as academic pressure, bullying, loneliness, substance abuse, and lack of social support.
  • Recognizing emotional distress – behavioral and verbal signs. 
  • Building resilience among students.
  • Role of teachers and parents in prevention. 
  • Stress management and self-care techniques.
  • Helplines and support systems available locally and nationally
  • Guidance on when and how to seek professional help for students in distress.

Interactive discussions, case studies, and role-play activities were used to enhance participants’ understanding and engagement.

At the end of the workshop, a vote of thanks by Dr. Balbir Kaur HOD (B. Ed) School of Education was extended to Dr. Pawan Sharma. Dean School of Education Prof. Malvika Sati Kandpal and other Faculty members presented a token of appreciation to the resource person. 

CONCLUSION

The workshop proved to be highly impactful, raising awareness and equipping teachers with practical knowledge and skills to address mental health concerns among students. Dr. Pawan Sharma’s expertise and interactive approach made the session engaging and meaningful.
