The Department of Drawing & Painting is running under School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shri Guru Ram Rai University, Dehradun. Drawing and Painting is the most powerful medium to express one’s feelings. Drawing and Painting has been a new stream of development in human history from the prehistoric period to the present day and has played an important role in human evolution.

A society or a nation cannot be imagined without its art and culture. To understand a civilization, one needs to study the visual arts and artefacts produced by its artists through the ages. Art practices through time have crossed many levels to reach a new environment, which is full of innovation, experiments and interventions of different disciplines. Today education in art for any Institution is equally important as science or any other area of study or discipline.

Undergraduate course:- The department offers a subject of drawing and painting in BA Programme. The course thoughtfully constructed to introduce the most recent art-historical studies to a diverse group of students while familiarizing them with the materials and techniques of art making. The courses covers a wide range of topics such as the overview of the art of the Indian subcontinent and the West, Contemporary Indian Art, Modern Western Art, Indian & Western Aesthetics, Art appreciation, and Art criticism.

Postgraduate program: M.A. Drawing and Painting (2 year Programme) is designed to sharpen artistic, intellectual and creative sensibilities. Students are groomed to become professional practising artists/painters. M.A. Drawing & Painting Programme divided into four semesters. The Syllabus is designed for candidates who have a sincere interest in the field of art and want to further explore the area.

The course mainly discuss about the theory and practices of Art, Art History, Art Education, Colour Schemes, Research Methods, Appropriate Tools, Materials and Techniques. This course also provides opportunities for artists to further explore their interests.
