Agriculture is concerned with cultivation, processing and marketing of crops and livestock. Most of the specialization in agriculture has a strong focus on the innovative use of technologies for higher productivity and optimal use of natural resources. India is one of the leading agriculture countries in the world. Agricultural sector contributes 29.4% of GDP and employs about 64% of the work force. The primary aim of agriculture is to make the land more productive and at the same time to protect it from deterioration and misuse. The diverse branch of agriculture sciences includes Agronomy, Horticulture, Economic Entomology, Animal Husbandry, Soil chemistry and Agricultural Economics.

After the completion of four year degree course, there are tremendous opportunities in government as well as private sector.

Q1. What is the scope of Agriculture?

Ans. Agriculture and allied sectors are the primary source of livelihood for majority of Indian population. The job opportunities in agriculture includes industrial and research sector. There are multiple government sectors in agriculture that hire B.Sc. Agriculture graduates including Government Department of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture, Plant protection organisations, Banking sector etc. In private sector there are multiple industries targeting agriculture and horticulture sector such as Maharashtra Hybrid Seed Private Limited, VNR seeds, Monsanto India Ltd., Chambal fertilisers etc . However, most of the students tend to pursue M.Sc. in different specialised fields of agriculture such as Agronomy, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology etc. for better prospect.

Q2. What is the relevance of B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture?

Ans. As agriculture and allied sector is a major revenue generation sector in India, there is an increase demand of skilled individual in agriculture sector to meet the requirements. B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture focuses on providing in depth academic intellect along with skills required in field and laboratory. If you want to pursue your career in horticulture, agronomy, plant protection, genetics and plant breeding, seed technology, food technology etc. choose B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture for an illustrious career.

Q3. Is it mandatory to have biology in 12th for opting B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture?

Ans. No, it is not mandatory. Students from both biology and mathematics background can opt for B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture.
